Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness that typically affects children under the age of 5. The symptoms of HFMD include fever, sore throat, and a rash on the hands, feet, and mouth. While HFMD is usually not serious, it can be uncomfortable for your child. Here are some tips to help manage the symptoms of HFMD:

  1. Manage symptoms with pain relievers: If your child is experiencing fever or discomfort due to the rash, you can give them over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Make sure to follow the recommended dosage for your child's age and weight.
  2. Encourage fluids and provide soft foods: To prevent dehydration, it's important to encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids. Offer water, juice, or popsicles throughout the day. Additionally, provide soft foods that won't irritate your child's mouth, such as yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes.
  3. Keep the child isolated to prevent the spread of the virus: HFMD is highly contagious and spreads through contact with infected saliva, mucus, or feces. To prevent the spread of the virus, keep your child home from school or daycare until their symptoms have resolved. Additionally, make sure to wash your hands frequently and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus.

With these tips, you can help manage your child's symptoms and prevent the spread of HFMD. If your child's symptoms persist or worsen, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider.
